California Dreaming - Masterpieces: Bungalow Architecture + Design

Bild's California Dreaming project has been featured in Masterpieces: Bungalow Architecture + Design publication edited by Michelle Galindo for Bruan Publishing:

The bungalow construction style is celebrating a revival. Its history began in India when British colonial administrators adopted a traditional Bengal building style for their summer residences. In the early 20th century, it became part of the American Dream in the US. Today, bungalows combine the ingenious spatial solutions of apartment layouts with the autonomy of detached single-family homes. Consisting of a single floor or one and a half stories, they are highly functional, environmentally friendly, and virtually free of barriers. The projects presented here highlight the various possibilities of bungalows in terms of size, spatial division, and design. All presented bungalows have in common the fact that they satisfy the highest demands of uniqueness, comfort and design quality.

Ross was living his dream, greatly contributing to the lives of people within highly disadvantaged communities and to habitat conservation for some of the world's most threatened species.

Ross will be very, very sorely missed. Our deepest condolences and thoughts are with Ross and Elief’s families at this very difficult time.

‘Green Speak’ Interview – Home Review Magazine, India

A recent interview with Ben Milbourne and Ross Langdon has been featured in the Green Speak section of current issue of Home Review Magazine from India. The interview focuses on Bild’s design approach in relation to environmental performance, and the evolving role of the architect:

What advice would you give a budding architect? “Our profession is complex and evolving rapidly; yet some things remain constant, including that design should deeply investigate any given task; using the unique convergence of the client, site and the brief as a springboard for design thinking. A process that is interactive and consultative in order to meet the needs of a client with true design innovation.”

Green Square Library – MOMA (NY) Exhibition

Bild & Index’s proposal for Green Square Library is to be shown in the upcoming MOMA (Museum of Modern Art, New York) exhibition Cut 'n' Paste: From Architectural Assemblage to Collage City, curated by Pedro Gadanho.

The ethos of collage shapes every aspect of contemporary culture, from the glut of signs and images to the many layers of digital information to the art of sampling. This installation revisits early uses of collage to trace its evolution as both an aesthetic technique central to architectural representation and a cultural practice of layering, juxtaposition, and remix that configures the city. Opening with the seamless digital collages that dominate contemporary architectural practice, Cut ‘n’ Paste pairs the early photo-collages of Mies van der Rohe with avant-garde experiments in photomontage, graphic design, and film. Architectural thinkers Colin Rowe and Fred Koetter’s Collage City (1978), an urban manifesto for the medium, provides a backdrop through which to reframe contemporary uses. As an architectural tool, this wide-ranging medium mixes high and popular references and offers a dynamic, inventive connection to cultural context.

The exhibition runs from July 10, 2013–January 5, 2014, for more information, see:

Blurred House - Architecture Review Asia Pacific

Bild's Blurred House project is featured in this month's Architecture Review Asia Pacific with a great review by Toby Horrocks:

"With the small-scale Blurred House, Ben Milbourne gets down and dirty with a contemporary suburban extension. Yet small it may be, but it isn't short on aesthetic or material drama, transitioning between old and new in a way that avoids the usual cliches... The new work is a mutation of the California Bungalow's own form and material. Metal roof cladding extends down to become wall cladding and the pitching roof is exploited for its sculptural and volumetric potential - angular geometry and drama is coaxed out of a traditional typology."
